Back to College season is around the corner and one the biggest nightmare of this important endeavor, beside studying of course, is cooking. Actually, not the cooking itself but the rather the time involved in this process and of course the deliciousness of the meal itself.
I’m no expert when it comes to cooking delicious and extravagant meals, but like many children in my age around the globe, I moved out of my parent’s comfort home and ending up eating and cooking on my own.
A person can easily be, at first, intimidated of cooking a meal that is balanced. And what is a balanced meal in today’s world? Well to me it is about three main things: time, mostly cost and of course health. First let us talk about time. In our modern world no one has enough time to do anything. It is all about moving quickly, be it in our private or public life. Because of this speed trend we often ignore one of the most important necessity of our existence and that’s eating. We usually subsidize eating in going to fast-food restaurants for a cheap unhealthy meal. We do so because of time but not only so. Money, or better the lack of it, is the second issue here. It’s easy to give up on preparing your own meal when you can go eat in a fancy restaurant. well not when you are scarce in financial resources and practically considered a poor guy, broke or just don’t find food that is appealing. This second problem leads to the third and the supposedly the most important which is health. When you want to save on time and money it usually comes at the cost of your health and this is a big mistake. Never allow it to grow on you.
This problem, as big as it may seem, can be solved. The solution is fast, cheap and healthy. Buying and using these ingredients will make your life easy. The ingredients are garlic, salt, onion, pasta, lemon, olive oil and your favorite kinds of vegetables such as cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes. These ingredients can make a meal on their own, honestly without my intervention. As shocking as it may seem if you simply mix them together you will find yourself with a cheap and healthy fast food. Now of course eating the same meal every day is not appealing or healthy as well. So, I will give you three simple recipes for you to prepare at the comfort of your own dorm using these simple ingredients.
The first quick meal is an all-time favorite of mine. At home we simply call it Tuna Salad, simple right. The main ingredients of this delicious dish, as you might have guessed and there’s no reward here for right answer, is of course tuna. You put it in a bowl you add minced garlic, mayonnaise, chopped onions, olive oil, pasta, a table spoon of lemon and some vegetables such as cucumber and tomatoes and that’s it, simple, right.
The next dish is even easier, quicker and even helps when you have an upset stomach. This dish in made of pasta, plain yogurt, minced garlic, cucumbers and sprinkle of salt and dried mint. Of course, you can add more to this quick meal such as tomatoes, a table spoon of lemon and olive oil. It is a magical meal in time of despair and stomach ache, they also rhyme.
The third meal is a little bit longer but still simple to make. This dish is all about potatoes and to be more specific boiling them. I know what you might think, it’s a bland and tasteless meal, I will strongly disagree and well, I say, you’re wrong. After you boil the potatoes mash them and add minced garlic, black pepper, cinnamon, salt and of course virgin olive oil, et voilà you got get yourself a healthy treat in a record time.
As you might have noticed no recipe needed because it is simple. Real simple.
Bon appétit and good luck with your exams.
